Myanmar's military junta has drafted an estimated 60,000 to 100,000 conscripts since activating a dormant conscription law in February 2024, using increasingly coercive methods including street abductions and forced recruitment of Rohingya civilians. While conscription has helped the Tatmadaw stabilize front lines and recapture several towns with Chinese support, it has simultaneously accelerated a mass exodus of working-age men, deepened an economic crisis that saw GDP contract by 1% in 2024, and drawn comparisons to some of the most repressive forced-service regimes in modern history.
