1 revisions for "India Moves to Let Every Ministry Censor Social Media, Expanding the World's Largest Content-Blocking Regime"

Anonymous16 days ago

The Indian government is considering amending Section 69A of its Information Technology Act to allow multiple ministries — including Home Affairs, Defence, and External Affairs — to independently order social media platforms to remove content, a power currently held only by the IT Ministry. The proposal, combined with a new 3-hour takedown mandate and the already-operational Sahyog portal that lets district-level police demand content removal, would dramatically expand censorship infrastructure in a country that already leads the world in internet shutdowns and blocked a record 28,000 URLs in 2024.
