Global mangrove loss rates have fallen 44% between 2000 and 2020, with some 393,000 hectares of new growth offsetting more than half of the 677,000 hectares lost in that period. But behind the optimistic headlines, roughly half of all restoration projects fail, carbon credit schemes face serious credibility questions, and the structural drivers of mangrove destruction — shrimp aquaculture, palm oil expansion, and coastal development — remain largely intact.
