Google announced it will replenish 120% of the water its data centers consume by 2030, backed by $500 million in infrastructure spending and 165 stewardship projects across 97 watersheds. But as the company's water consumption has more than doubled since 2019 — reaching 7.2 billion gallons in 2024 — hydrologists, local communities, and environmental advocates question whether offset-style replenishment in distant watersheds genuinely compensates for drawdown on stressed local aquifers, and whether voluntary corporate pledges may delay binding regulation.
