NPR is offering buyouts to approximately 300 employees and reorganizing its newsroom to close an $8 million budget gap, driven by the dissolution of the Corporation for Public Broadcasting after Congress rescinded $1.1 billion in funding in July 2025. The cuts come despite $113 million in recent philanthropic gifts and a FY2025 surplus, as leadership anticipates worsening conditions from declining sponsorship revenue, shrinking listenership, and the permanent loss of federal support that once flowed to more than 1,500 local stations — leaving U.S. public broadcasting more structurally vulnerable than that of any peer democracy.
