Jürgen Habermas, the German philosopher whose ideas about communication, democracy, and the public sphere shaped postwar intellectual life more than perhaps any other thinker, has died at 96 in Starnberg, Germany. Over seven decades, he transformed how scholars and citizens think about democratic legitimacy, confronted Germany's Nazi past, championed European integration, and in his final years warned that social media was hollowing out the very public discourse he spent a lifetime defending.
