Death, Destruction, and Record-Breaking Hail: Inside March 2026's Devastating Tornado Siege Across the Central U.S.
A relentless series of tornado outbreaks has carved a path of destruction from the Southern Plains to the Great Lakes in the first two weeks of March 2026, killing at least ten people, injuring dozens, and potentially shattering a state hail record — raising urgent questions about whether the nation's tornado season is growing more violent.
A Deadly Week Unfolds
The devastation began on the evening of March 5, when a powerful supercell tracked across northwestern Oklahoma into Kansas, spawning multiple tornadoes. A 47-year-old woman and her 13-year-old daughter from Fairview, Oklahoma, were found dead in their vehicle near a highway intersection in Major County — their crash determined to be tornado-related [1]. An EF3 tornado near Beggs, Oklahoma, claimed two more lives. By the time the system raced into Michigan on March 6 and 7, it had spawned more than 25 confirmed tornadoes across five states [2].
Michigan bore the brunt of the early-week violence. A high-end EF3 tornado, packing winds up to 150 mph, tore through Union City in Branch County, killing three people and injuring twelve [3]. In Cass County, 12-year-old Silas Anderson died after being caught in another tornado — his parents found him injured and administered first aid, but he succumbed to his injuries at a hospital [4]. Governor Gretchen Whitmer declared a state of emergency as the National Weather Service confirmed the Union City tornado was the earliest EF3 on record for the state of Michigan [5].
But the worst was yet to come.
March 10: A Supercell's 100-Mile Rampage
On Tuesday, March 10, the Storm Prediction Center issued a rare Level 4 out of 5 risk — an "Enhanced to Moderate" threat — centered on the Midwest, while a parallel corridor of danger stretched across the Southern Plains [6]. The forecast proved grimly accurate.
A single, long-lived supercell thunderstorm first organized near Pontiac in Livingston County, Illinois, around 4:50 PM CDT. Over the next six hours, it tracked more than 100 miles eastward, spawning a family of at least four tornadoes across Livingston and Kankakee counties in Illinois and Newton, Jasper, and Starke counties in northwestern Indiana [7].
The first major tornado struck the Kankakee area around 6:24 PM, ripping through the southwest portion of the city before crossing the Kankakee River into Aroma Park. An EF3 tornado with peak winds near 150 mph tore through the suburb, damaging industrial, commercial, and residential areas [8]. The tornado touched down near the Kankakee Fairgrounds and continued northeast, leaving a trail of downed trees, sheared power lines, and demolished structures. Kankakee Mayor Christopher Curtis confirmed nine people sustained injuries, though none were life-threatening [9].
As the supercell continued its relentless march eastward into Indiana, the National Weather Service took the extraordinary step of issuing a Tornado Emergency for Knox in Starke County — the first such warning anywhere in the United States in 2026 [10]. The warning told residents: "This is a life-threatening situation. Seek shelter now!"
The confirmed large and destructive tornado then barreled into Lake Village in Newton County, where officials said the small community "took a direct hit" [11]. The twister touched down on the south side of town and traveled eastward toward Roselawn, carving a devastating path 45 to 50 miles long through rural Indiana.
"Total Devastation": The Human Toll in Lake Village
When first responders reached Lake Village, they found what they described as "total devastation" [12]. More than 100 structures were damaged and 32 were destroyed. At least 70 utility poles were snapped, leaving roads impassable and communities in the dark. The sheer volume of calls for downed power lines and blocked roads briefly overwhelmed 911 dispatch centers [10].
Among the wreckage at the 8000 block of County Road 600 West, rescuers discovered the bodies of Ed and Arlene Kozlowski — ages 89 and 84 — an elderly couple who had lived in the home for years. Their preliminary cause of death was ruled multiple blunt force trauma [13]. The couple, married for more than 60 years, had been planning Ed's 90th birthday celebration at the very home the tornado destroyed [14].
Four firefighters responding to the disaster learned their own homes had been severely damaged by the same storm they were racing to help others survive [9].
"I seen a dumpster fly by," one Lake Village survivor told CBS Chicago, describing the terrifying moments when the tornado struck while he sheltered in a closet [15].
A Hailstone for the History Books
Beyond its deadly tornadoes, the March 10 supercell produced hail of staggering proportions. Across the Kankakee area, hailstones ranging from 3 to 5 inches in diameter — grapefruit-sized and larger — pummeled homes, vehicles, and businesses. More than 7,000 customers lost power in Kankakee County alone [8].
But one hailstone stood out. A stone measuring 6.0 inches in diameter — roughly the size of a softball and a half — was recovered in Kankakee. If verified by NOAA's State Climate Extremes Committee, it would shatter the previous Illinois state record of 4.75 inches set in Minooka in June 2015 by a margin of more than an inch [16]. AccuWeather meteorologists called it a "monster" and said it was "likely to shatter" the existing record [17].
The verification process, however, is painstaking: the stone must be stored in a freezer at full size until it can be weighed, measured, and photographed by NOAA's committee — a process that can take months or even years [16].
Additional massive hailstones of 5.5 inches were reported near Campus, Illinois, and 4.8-inch hail struck Darien [7]. In Texas, grapefruit-sized hail measuring 4 inches was also reported during the outbreak [6].
Texas and the Southern Plains
While the Midwest bore the heaviest toll, the Southern Plains were not spared. In the early morning hours of March 8, a supercell spawned an EF2 tornado near Prospect in Marion County, Texas, touching down at approximately 3:09 AM. The tornado was on the ground for five minutes, its path covering more than 3 miles with estimated wind speeds of 115 mph [18].
The twister lifted a home from its foundation, destroyed a barn, damaged vehicles, and uprooted large trees. Two people were transported to hospitals with minor injuries [19]. Marion County officials issued a disaster declaration in response.
On March 11, the threat continued as tornadoes were confirmed in the St. Louis metropolitan area, including an EF1 tornado that struck the communities of Moro and Midway, Illinois, with winds estimated at 95 mph [20].
The Ongoing Threat
Even as communities began the painful process of cleanup, the danger persisted. On March 11, tornado watches stretched from southern Indiana to the Lake Erie shoreline, encompassing the Louisville, Cincinnati, and Cleveland metro areas. More than 60 million people from the Gulf Coast to the Ohio Valley and Mid-Atlantic faced a Level 2 of 5 threat for severe storms [21].
In Kankakee County, Sheriff Mike Downey, County Board Chairman Matthew Alexander-Hildebrand, and Mayor Curtis filed an emergency declaration with the State of Illinois requesting disaster assistance [22]. The Kankakee County Emergency Management Agency and the Illinois Emergency Management Agency established online portals for residents to self-report property damage.
A Season Running Hot
The violence of early March 2026 fits an alarming pattern. January 2026 was relatively quiet, with just 21 confirmed tornadoes — below the 1991-2020 average of approximately 35 for the month. But February surged to 47 confirmed tornadoes, well above the monthly average [23]. March, with its successive outbreaks, appears poised to far exceed the typical monthly count of roughly 80 tornadoes.
Long-range forecasters project between 1,050 and 1,250 tornadoes for the full 2026 season, compared to 1,544 preliminary tornado reports in 2025 and a historical average of 1,225 [23]. Weather Track US has identified a corridor from parts of the Plains into the Mississippi Valley where overall spring activity could finish above average, with the heaviest activity weighted toward March and early April [24].
The clustering of violent, long-track supercells producing EF3-level tornadoes in early March — traditionally before the peak of tornado season in late April through June — has drawn attention from meteorologists. The Union City, Michigan, tornado on March 6 was the earliest EF3 ever recorded in the state [5]. The March 10 Kankakee Valley supercell's 100-mile-plus track and simultaneous production of extreme hail and violent tornadoes represented an exceptionally dangerous meteorological event.
The Road to Recovery
For communities like Lake Village, Aroma Park, and Union City, the cleanup will take months or longer. In Lake Village, with more than 30 structures completely destroyed, the immediate priorities remain restoring power, clearing roads, and providing shelter for displaced families. In Kankakee County, officials are working through the damage assessment process that could lead to state and federal disaster assistance.
Across the central United States, at least ten people lost their lives to tornadoes in the first eleven days of March 2026 alone — Ed and Arlene Kozlowski in Lake Village; four people in Michigan including a 12-year-old boy; a mother and daughter in Oklahoma; and two fatalities near Beggs, Oklahoma. Dozens more were injured, and hundreds of structures were damaged or destroyed.
As the peak of tornado season approaches, the National Weather Service, FEMA, and state emergency management agencies face the grim reality that the most dangerous months are still ahead. The question confronting meteorologists and communities alike is not whether more violent storms will come, but how prepared the nation's warning systems and emergency responses will be when they do.
