Geochemists at the University of Toronto and University of Ottawa have published the first peer-reviewed measurements of sustained hydrogen discharge from billion-year-old Canadian Shield rock, documenting 140 tonnes per year from a single mine site near Timmins, Ontario. While the discovery adds scientific credibility to the emerging field of natural "white" hydrogen, the gap between geological measurement and commercial energy production remains vast — no natural hydrogen project anywhere in the world has yet reached industrial scale, and significant regulatory, economic, and technical hurdles stand in the way.
