Despite safe haven laws in all 50 U.S. states and a growing network of over 340 baby boxes, newborn infants continue to be abandoned in dumpsters, trash bags, and sacks across the globe — with cases in 2025-2026 spanning from the Bronx to Rio de Janeiro to the Philippines. While unsafe abandonments in the U.S. have dropped 70% since 2004 and infant homicides have fallen 67%, dozens of infants are still illegally abandoned each year, with roughly half not surviving, pointing to persistent gaps in mental health care, prenatal services, and public awareness.
