Astronomers at the University of Washington have published evidence of what may be the first observed real-time collision between two exoplanets, around a star called Gaia20ehk some 11,000 light-years away. The discovery, published March 11, 2026 in The Astrophysical Journal Letters, follows a series of recent breakthroughs — including Hubble's imaging of planetesimal collisions in the Fomalhaut system — that are transforming our understanding of how planetary systems violently assemble themselves.
